The Photo Exhibition 'Cities on the Move - Post-Ottoman, Ankara, Belgrade, Istanbul and Sarajevo, Through the Press Photographer's Lens, 1920s and 1930s' is on view at the Bosniak Institute in Sarajevo.

The exhibited photographs were taken by photographers of Turkish and Yugoslav daily newspapers, in the twenties and thirties of the last century. The photos show everyday life in the cities which, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, became part of new states, in this case the Republic of Turkey and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. A large number of the exhibited photographs show the "new" way of life that, as a consequence of the "new civilizational values," that changed significantly and differed from that which was usual in the former environment. Especially the change of the moral values and norms.

Photographs are divided into five thematic units: City Center, People and cult of bodies, Dressage and social classes, Crib and socializing and Čaršija. It is especially interesting to see the famous city beaches of Istanbul, Ankara, Sarajevo and Belgrade as they once looked, but also objects that no longer exist today.

The exhibition Cities on the Move - Post-Ottoman is the result of a research project SIBA - A Visual Approach to ExploreEveryday Life in Turkish and Yugoslav Cities, 1920s and 1930s, which is associated to the Middle Eastern Studies, Social Science Department, University of Basel, and financed by thr Swiss National Science Foundation.

The author of the project and the curator of the exhibition is Prof. Dr. Nataša Mišković. The exhibition is on view until April 27.
