The mosque was destroyed in the period of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-1996) during the aggression of Serbia and Montenegro. The mosque was a masterpiece of Ottoman classical architecture as we can see on this old photo, and was illuminated with great arabesques.
The mosque will be restored in its original using the original remains. Reconstruction will be monitored by experts. Behind the entire project is the Islamic Community of BiH. The begining of the reconstruction of the mosque is funded by the U.S. Ambassador Fund in the amount of $ 98,000.
The construction of temporary shelters for the fragments began during which they will examine the the foundation and the fragments taken from remains. Then the building of the mosque will start, in the first phase some meter or two - says Medina Hadzihasanovic-Katana, Assistant to the Commission for Historical Monuments. The analysis of the part of the foundation that they found on the coast of the river Drina will establish where from the extracted stone came from in the 1549. This way the material for the reconstruction of the mosque will be taken from the original location.
