Ancient art and artefacts from Islam will be on display at Glasgow Central Mosque this weekend.

Quranic manuscripts dating to the 14th and 15th Centuries collected from places as diverse as Indonesia and Spain will be shown alongside rare coins and astrological instruments.

Part of Doors Open Days, the exhibition launches on Friday 17 September with a chance to witness prayers at the mosque at 1400. Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Glasgow Council Leader Gordon Matheson and representatives of different faiths will attend the launch.

Navid Bakhsh of Glasgow Central Mosque said: “The discoveries made by men and women in Muslim civilisation have left their mark on the way we live today. This exhibition will hopefully bring light and educate the wider community on its rich heritage, culture and open its door to people of all backgrounds and faiths.”

Organisers are expecting 3000 visitors to the mosque over the weekend to see the exhibition and take guided tours of the mosque.

The exhibition runs until Sunday 19 September.
