This beautiful Ottoman mosque, designed by Mimar Sinan in 1555, is located in the Besiktas district in Istanbul (Turkey).

Sinan Pasha was originally Bosnian and one of the most famous Ottoman admirals. This mosque is largely different from other Sinan achievements. The central dome has a hexagonal base, and the entire project was inspired by Uc Serefeli Mosque or Muradiye Mosque (built in 1438-47) in Edirne (Turkey), which was the first Ottoman mosque dominated by a central dome.

Sinan’s older design was given a new dimension to the architectural solution, based on the contributions of classical Ottoman architecture. In this regard, we can see stronger developing of the design of architectural elements and specifically resolving the external facade with a coloured combination of brick and stone and adding a large number of different shaped windows. We can acknowledge that Sinan, though inspired by some earlier solutions, made very bold and original architectural structures.
