"I see myself as a researcher. I love and am always delighted to find new media to integrate into calligraphy or with which to practise it. For example, I invented a technology permitting the creation of virtual calligraphy in real time. Naz often works with natural elements such as stems, salt and spices but also enjoys exploring the relationship between the different elements. “I enjoy creating order out of chaos, which is a sort of meditation for me,” said Naz. “The materials I use hold a collective memory, either my own personal narrative or in conjunction to the origin of the materials.”

The Art of Hajj by Venetia Porter

‘The Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam’ exhibition took place at the British Museum this year. It was curated by Venetia Porter, curator of the Islamic and Contemporary Middle East Department, author of ‘The Art of Hajj’. This is not a collection of academic essays on art, such as those contained in the large exhibition catalogue that was published at the same time. It is a small and beautifully set out book that focuses on key objects in the Hajj exhibition.

Sabrina Amrani Art Gallery at Beirut Art Fair 2012

Light from the Middle East: New Photography

A major collection of contemporary photography focusing on the Middle East, supported by the Art Fund, has been established for the public by the British Museum and the V&A it was announced today. Most of the Collection will be showcased in the major exhibition, 'Light from the Middle East: New Photography' at the V&A from 13 November 2012 – 7 April 2013.

LONDON / In a dramatic bidding battle at Sotheby’s London saleroom (on Tuesday night 19th June 2012), a new benchmark was set when Joan Miró’s 1927 modern masterpiece Peinture (Étoile Bleue) sold for £23,561,250 / $36,946,396 / €29,260,764, exceeding the pre-sale estimate of £15-20 m / US$ 23.7 - 31.6 m / € 18.4 -24.5 m and shattering the previous record for the artist at auction.
