El Anatsui’s First Retrospective in the Middle East

El Anatsui: Triumphant Scale, the largest ever survey mounted of the work of the acclaimed artist El Anatsui (born 1994, Ghana) perhaps Africa’s most prominent living artist, will go on show at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art from 1 October 2019 – 31 January 2020.

Winners of HIPA’s ‘THE SEA’ and ‘TRADITIONS’ Instagram Photo Contest Announced

The Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) has concluded the April and May editions, which were titled ‘The Sea’ and ‘Traditions’ respectively. A total of 10 winners were announced for both contests with submissions being received under the hashtag #HIPAContest_TheSea for the April edition and #HIPAContest_Traditions for May. The contest winners hailed from; UAE, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Oman, India and Turkey.

Ottoman Bridges in Sarajevo

Of all the cities in Bosnia, the biggest concentration of the bridges in city area was in Sarajevo, the capital city divided by the river Miljacka where most of the bridges were built on. Also, the bridges were built in the peripheral part of the city on rivers Željeznica and Bosnia. The exact number of bridges is unknown but there was at least seven stone bridges from the Ottoman period, of which four are preserved.

Sokollu Mehmet Pasha and His Mosque Complex in Istanbul

Sokollu Mehmet Pasha, also known as Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic, was born in Sokolovici, Bosnia. Recognized for his outstanding abilities, honesty and commitment to public service, he secured several important positions within the Ottoman administration, such as imperial chamberlain, chief treasurer, governor or beylerbey of Rumelia, navy admiral, and army commander.
