Dubai Art Season concludes with ‘Arts & Culture Forum’

Dubai, UAE; April 13, 2014: The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated Authority for culture, arts, and heritage, is marking the culmination of Dubai Art Season, the city’s umbrella arts initiative, with a dedicated ‘Arts & Culture Forum’ on Monday, April 14, 2014.

‘Get Acquainted’ - Beyond the Scope of Modern and Classical Arabic Calligraphy

Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial has always been a welcoming host for modernity and tradition. The launch of the sixth edition of Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial starting on April 2, 2014 has been announced on the press conference at the Department of Culture and Information in Al Layah area. This year the biennial will be under the theme 'Get Acquainted', aiming to reveal the power of the letter in bringing cultures together. An art that reflects the spirit of the place and the existence.

On April 9, 2014 Sotheby’s Arts of the Islamic World sale will bring to the market an exquisite selection of paintings, manuscripts, textiles, ceramics, weaponry and rugs. Spanning over 1000 years, these objects offer a remarkable testimony to the astonishing scope of artistic production in the lands under Islamic patronage from Spain to China. Among the 237 objects to go under the hammer, highlights include a life-size portrait of Persian ruler Fath ‘Ali Shah, an important Iznik pottery tile depicting the Ka’ba, and an eleventh-century rock crystal chess piece.

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in the presence of Sheikh Khalid bin Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Urban Planning Council, inaugurated the exhibition ‘So that you might know each other’ – the World of Islam from North Africa to China and beyond, which exhibits artefacts from the Vatican Ethnological Museum belonging to Islamic communities from North Africa to China and beyond.

Art Dubai 2014 Featuring 85 Galleries From 34 Countries

Art Dubai, the region’s largest and most global art fair, opened its doors to the public on March 20, 2014 at Madinat Jumeirah and runs until 22 March. The eighth annual edition of the fair is the biggest in its history, featuring 85 galleries from 34 countries, with over 500 artists participating across its programmes. Seventy museum groups and more than 400 international curators are attending the fair, from all over the world.
