SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 2010

Taking an important in Turkish book arts, “ebru” is about splattering oil paints with special brushes on intensified water and transferring the prevailing forms onto a paper. The word is thought to be derived from the Persian word “ebrî” (meaning “like a cloud”) or “ebre” which meant “designed look, paper or fabric” in Cagatay language. Although some resources schedules this art back to the 13th century, the oldest “ebru” was made in the 15th Century.

The first event of the project is to realize an “ebru” exhibition at new Mosque’s Sultan Mansion under counseling of Alparslan Babaoğlu. Other events will be about holding ebru workshops in Taksim, Kadıköy, Eminönü, Levent and Sultanahmet along five weekends open to public with participation of ebru trainers. A second exhibition will feature works that will come out of those workshops with public participation. Both exhibitions will be accompanied with special catalogues.

The project “Ebru comes out of Tank” aims to raise awareness on the art of “ebru” through performance shows and exhibitions in an effort to introduce a traditional accumulation to be re-produced with modern interpretations.
