“European Rescue Umbrella” by Wamidh Al-Ameri
Aug 22, 2012 Exhibition
During his artist-Âinâ€residence program in Lucerne the Iraqi artist Wamidh Al-ÂAmeri has dedicated himself to the serious issues currently present in the Arabic world. His works deal with war, religion, poverty, escape, rebellion and resignation. However, artist doesn't want to evoke anxiety through the seriousness of these issues but rather make them accessible to everyone.
Wamidh Al-ÂAmeri made a new project called: "European Rescue Umbrella", an umbrella with an excerpt from the Qur'an written on it and a half moon on the tip. By making people walk with the symbol of Islam in front of the Jesuit church in the Swiss city Lucerne the artist is attempting to create a dialogue between the Christianity and Islam. The artist plays with associations so the work's title "European Rescue Umbrella" could symbolize the money from Islamic countries supporting many companies and banks in Europe in the present difficult economical situation.
