LONDON, UK / Arts Canteen, a new arts organization set up to improve links between artists and musicians from the Mediterranean, Middle East and Europe, is delighted to announce that Palestinian artist Majed Shala will be having a solo exhibition "Breathing the Air" at the Arab British Centre in London from 23 to 27 May. It is the first time Shala and his work will be in the UK.

I am not alone by Majed Shala

Shala’s work uses the shapes identified with traditional Arabic script but these are not resolved into meaningful text. Breathing the Air invites us to consider a tradition of calligraphy alongside a more contemporary exploration of the human form and its environment and now, with the explosion of the Arab Spring and its demand for open societies, to breathe the air.

Shala has a Masters degree from Scranton University, USA and since the early 1990s has been committed to the education and training of young Gazan artists. He has exhibited his photos, painting and video installations in Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Brazil, Germany, US, South Africa, Jordan and Italy.

Aser El Saqqa, the founder and director of Arts Canteen said:
“We are confident that Breathing the Air will give people in London a taste of the rich vein of talent and creativity among artists in the Middle East.”

Majed Shala said:
“I always try to breathe through my paintings. Like me, they are surrounded but my paintings have a chance to get out to the world more easily, whether in an art gallery or on a website. My visit to London will be a wonderful opportunity to engage in dialogue with other artists.”
