Calligraphic artworks by two Tunisian artists on view at the Calligraphers' Studios in Sharjah

The Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival has been organized under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, by the Cultural Affairs Department at the Sharjah Department of Culture. Next to contemporary artworks, the 22nd edition Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival presents also masters of traditional arts, such as calligraphy, tezhib (illumination), ceramic arts, book-binding arts, etc.

HE Abdullah Al Owais, Chairman of Sharjah Department of Culture; Mohammed Al Qaseer, Head of Cultural Affairs and General Coordinator at the Department of Culture; and Farah Qassim Mohammed, Islamic Arts Festival Executive, attended the opening of the exhibition Kairouaniat and toured the exhibition with the artists, in the presence of media and esteemed guests.

Most of the Quranic manuscripts from the Maghreb region have been written in the Maghribi script. The Maghrebi script is distinguished by its special beauty and its sculptural definition of each letter. The calligraphic artworks by Amor Jomni and Ameur Ben Jeddou include several calligraphic styles, including Al Mojahwar, Al Mojahwar Al Jalil, Moroccan Thuluth, and Zamami.

The Tunisian Association of Arabic Calligraphy has issued a typeface, the 'Kairouani Script' designed by Ameur Ben Jeddou. Tunisian artists Amor Jomni (1957) and Ameur Ben Jeddou (1954) use Kufic-Kairouani and Maghribi script in their works that have been exhibited in many Arab countries and are currently on view at the Calligraphers' Studios in Sharjah..

Amor Jomni

Amor Jomni is a jury member of the former Algerian Calligraphy Festival and an honorary member of Arabic calligraphy association in countries such as Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt, ad Morocco, in addition to the Iraqi Cultural Center. He also designed the calligraphy for the Tunisian banknotes and some coins.

Ameur Ben Jeddou

Ameur Ben Jeddou is a member of the Tunisian Association of Arabic Calligraphy and an honorary member of the Egyptian General Association of Arabic Calligraphy and the Algerian Errakim Association. He won many awards, including the 3rd prize in the Tunisian National Calligraphy Competition (Kairouan Kufic script) in 2006.

The exhibition Kairouaniat, at the Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival (SIAF), will be open until January 21, 2020.
