Mutant Signs by Diego de Moya

As part of the Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival the exhibition 'Mutant Signs' is on view at the Sharjah Art Museum.

Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, the Cultural Affairs Department at the Sharjah Department of Culture has organized the 21st edition of the Sharjah Islamic Arts Festival (SIAF).

'Mutant Signs', as part of the SIAF, officially opened at the Sharjah Art Museum in the presence of Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah; Mohammed Al Qaseer, Director of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Farah Qassim Mohammed, Islamic Arts Festival Executive and the respected guests.

The light installation 'Mutant Signs', was created in 2018, with methacrylate sheets, presents an Arabic alphabet, starting with the elif and continuing with next letters. Each frame contains one that is then slightly moved in each next frame, illuminated and combined with floral branches, frames create a mesmerizing effect. The frames are slowly illuminated, one at the time from back to the front and back again. Each letter is beautifully designed and layered. The artist uses Arabic calligraphy to develop these 'mutant signs'. The dominating colour is blue which enhances a feeling of serenity and peace.

Diego de Moya was born in Jaen (Andalusia, Spain) in 1943. He is a visual artist and an architect, who successfully works with sculpture, architecture, and painting. He studied Muslim culture in Morocco and he was also awarded many awards, including the 1st prize of the European Civil Public Places Award for the Mural of the Elbieta Plaza in Madrid.
