Ottoman Sultan’s Imperial Decree Collection

Remzi Gurs’s private collection of the “Ottomans Sultans Imperial Decree (Firman’s)” has now been available for public showing for a limited time. Imperial decrees (Firman’s) are orders by the Sultan. Rich in colour, style and calligraphy they are amazing art pieces. The collection includes decrees from 14th century to the last Ottoman Sultans from across the Muslim world in Africa, Europe and Middle East, many of which tell a story of how the Sultan viewed the world and how it build its discourse through language and art.
This collection of 40, over the course of 600 years shows periodical developments in calligraphy, ornamentation, alterations in style and formal maturation as a whole. Some of these 40 priceless collections include:
• A decree by Süleyman the Magnificent, bestowing tillage rights of land in Palestine township of Damascus Province to Abdi Aga.
• A decree by Sultan Mustafa II, appointing Habibe Hanim to maintain and clean the Prophet Mosque in Madina after the passing of previous employee Iskender Bey.
• A decree by Sultan Mahmud II, regarding the protection of the Non-Muslim (Dhimmi) during tax collection and forbidding any injustice.
