Brick Bending found his inspiration in Islamic art, specifically in geometry of Islamic patterns that gave him an intense desire to work. For many years he explored Islamic patterns and started constructing them the with LEGO® bricks, pushing the limits of what he can create. It took time and patience to build a large scale installation currently on view at the Sharjah Art Museum.
Brick Bending explores the emergence of abstract geometry from the nature of ubiquitous building toy. He is best known for creating smooth, elegant curves out of notoriously rectangular bricks using a technique he calls "brick bending". The artist is often asked if he applies heat or glue in his designs in order to create his signature arcs, angles, and curves. The answer is that designs are the result of patience and experimentation, as well as deep and abiding love for the beauty of geometry and symmetry.
Brick Bending lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
