Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial 2014 presents 'Testimonial Verses', a remarkable exhibition of Islamic calligraphy masterpieces at Sharjah Art Museum, calligraphy works from the private collection of HE Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, the Chairman of the National Federal Council.

The exhibition was inaugurated by HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the U.A.E. and Ruler of Sharjah in the presence of HE Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr, HE Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Owais, Head of the Lead Committee, Chairman of the Sharjah Department of Culture and Information, Hisham Al Madhloum, General Coordinator of Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial and numerous guests.

The private collection contains the works of the most famous contemporary calligraphers such as Hasan Çelebi, Bikhtyarija Jawad, Mohammed Zakaria, Yusif Chen, Nuria Garcia and other respected masters. The artworks show the beauty of Qur'anic verses in all its splendour.

Besides the classical compositions, some works show a different approach and new interpretations of traditional forms, while maintaining the classic beauty of each letter. Just to mention a few: Munir Sharani presents an interesting combination of kufi and sumbuli style with eye-catching colours, Yusif Chen shows a combination of Arabic script and classical Chinese composition, Mohammed Abdul Qadir creates unusual formats with kufi script and exciting colour pallete.

Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial is organized by the Directorate of Arts in the Department of Culture and Information, Government of Sharjah, UAE and this year is held as part of the celebrations of naming Sharjah as the Islamic Capital of Culture for 2014. The Biennial will run until June 2, 2014.
