DOHA / On 14th -15th September, 2012 Sotheby's staged an exhibition in Doha, Qatar at Katara Gallery, Building 22, Katara Cultural Village, of select highlights from the company’s forthcoming London biannual ‘Arts of the Islamic World’ auction on October 3rd 2012. The exhibition featured 40 masterworks of fine craftsmanship and traditions unique to Muslim culture, which span the Islamic world and ages.

Here are some highlights of the masterworks from the exhibition:

A Large Fatimid White-Ground Lustre Pottery Jar, Egypt, 10th - 1th Century

of ovoidal shape on a flat base, with a raised band at the shoulder, the short inward-sloping neck with everted rim, the body painted in a golden lustre over an opaque white glaze with a band of foliated Kufic script around the neck and in vertical bands on the body alternating with foliate decoration, the interior glazed, 18cm. max. diam. 26.7cm. height. The inscriptions on the body repeat of possibly: al-‘izz ….‘Glory ….' Around the neck repeat of one word or a short phrase: undeciphered.

An Important Mina'i Bowl With a Falconer On Horseback, Persia, Late 12th/early 13th Century

of deep round form on a straight foot, composed of fritware painted in lavender, blue, turquoise, red, beige, and black with black outlines on an opaque white glaze, featuring a falconer on horseback, with a band of abstracted calligraphy near the rim and on the exterior. Dimensions: 20.2cm. diam. 8cm. height.

A Gold Cup With Incised And Pin-Pricked Decoration, Central Asia, 14th Century

composed of finely hammered gold, with a bulbous body, cylindrical flaring neck and everted rim, on a short, splayed foot, with very fine pin-pricked pointillé decoration featuring floral designs and minor bands of cintamani triple-dot motifs, the foot engraved with stiff petals, 9.5cm.

A Rare Large Qur'an Leaf In Late Hijazi Script, Naar East Or Arabian Peninsula, Late 7th - Early 8th Century AD

Text: Surah Yunus (X), verses 6 to 21. Islamic manuscript leaf on parchment, 21 lines per page of early Arabic script written in brown ink, letter-pointing (i‘jam) in the same brown ink, vocalisation of red and green dots possibly added slightly later, single verse divisions marked with vertical rows of three or four angled dashes in brown ink, 38 by 28.5cm.

A Rare Pair Of Silk Lampas Trousers, Sogdiana, Central Asia, 7th - 8th Century

of typical form, with straight legs and a wide waist, composed of multiple silk panels, woven with honey, dark brown, green and pink threads, decorated with vegetal designs comprising lotus buds, palmettes, peonies and vines issuing from a palm-like stem, inner silk lining, 59cm. width. 131cm. length.

A Magnificent Mughal Gem-Set Jade-Hilded Dagger, India, 18th Century

the tapering double-edged steel blade with central ridge and swollen tip, damascened with foliate motifs, the jade hilt of baluster form, inlaid with gold floral decoration, set with foiled rubies and diamonds in the kundan technique 52cm. A similar Mughal hilt composed of nephrite jade and set with diamonds and rubies in gold, but with a slightly varying shape, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Property from the Harvey B.
