Absolute and Infinite: New Interpretations of Islamic Geometric Designs

DALLAS / Absolute and Infinite: New Interpretations of Islamic Geometric Designs opens October 18 at The Museum of Geometric and MADI Art. The exhibit, curated by Ronald Watson, will run through January 10, 2014.

This exhibition presents four artists working with the knowledge of Islamic patterns. Shafaq Ahmad, who was born in Pakistan, paints and also works in three dimensions, digital media and mixed media. She is intrigued and inspired by mysticism: belief in the all-encompassing unity of the Creator. This belief influences both the conceptual and formal aspects of her work. Richard Henry is an artist and teacher with particular interest in the contemplative aspects of pattern. He has undertaken field studies in Egypt, Morocco, Syria, Turkey and Iran. Lateefa Spiker uses an expanding abstract language to communicate her explorations into transience and the infinite. Her reflective work is rooted in the spiritual traditions that underwrite traditional Islamic art and investigates the relationship between order and chaos, the contingent and the finite, and beauty and spirituality. Adam Williamson is a skilled stone and wood carver and practicing artist in many media. He has worked with artists in Greece, Spain, Morocco and Turkey in pursuit of increasing his understanding of Islamic art.
