ISTANBUL / Islamic Arts Magazine visited All Arts Istanbul (18-21 April 2013). The event included a conference series which included talks by prominent Turkish art historians and Ottoman and traditional art experts.

An Overview of Applied Classic and Original Calligraphy

Savaş Çevik (Faculty Member at Halic University) assessed the present state of the art of calligraphy, deeply rooted in tradition and evaluated the common and innovative aspects of it.

Ottomans in World Fairs and their Effects on Orientalism

Orientalism, one of the most significant subjects of art history has generally been defined as the distorted percepcions and pre-concepts of the West about the East. Art Historian Prof. Dr. Semra Germaner who has worked in this field for many years, presented the matter from an opposite perspective and illustrated how Ottoman participation at the World Fairs, in the 19th century, influenced Orientalism in the West.

Female Calligraphers Throughout History

Art Historian Dr. Hilal Kazan discussed one of the most neglected areas of calligraphy which is founded on a significant tradition. Dr. Kazan analyzed the female calligraphers who have made contributions in this realm.

A Turkish Bath (Hamam) in Istanbul Istanbul and Ottoman Tiles

Çinili Hamam (Turkish Bath with Tiles) located in Istanbul and built by the famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan on behalf of Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha. It is one of the most significant architecture in the history of Istanbul. It represents one of the earliest Sinan's work and also the turning point in the Ottoman Tile Art. The tiles were made at the time when the famous cherry red colour had not yet been discovered. Çinili Hamam is now under construction. Notable speakers were: Prof. Dr. Filiz Yenişehirlioglu (Faculty Member at the Başkent University), Şenay Onuk (Restaurator and Tile Specialist) and Charlotte Maurry (Scientific Adviser at Louvre Museum).
